Weak airflow and a musty smell in Town 'n' Country homes
One bedroom never cools. The hallway vent barely moves paper. You smell something damp when the system kicks on. In this part of unincorporated Hillsborough County, that trio usually points at the ductwork, not the condenser outside.
Town 'n' Country went up mainly in the 1960s and 70s. Single-story concrete block ranches, low-pitch roofs, shallow attics. The original systems ran duct board plenums with early flex branches. Most have been replaced once or twice. The old duct board often stayed put. So you get newer flex stapled onto a plenum older than the homeowner.
The shallow attic is the real problem. There is no room to walk between the trusses. Flex gets crushed against the bottom chord, kinked at the boot, or left sagging in long bellies. A crushed run strangles airflow before dust does. We check that first.
Salt air off Old Tampa Bay and constant humidity do the rest. Damp insulation holds odor. Fiber sheds off aged duct board edges. Condensation collects where metal meets block.
Some ducts should not be cleaned at all. If the inner liner is torn or the board is delaminating, cleaning spreads debris. We will say so.

Frequently Asked Questions
My house is a 1970s block ranch and the attic is barely crawlable — can you even get to my ducts?
Usually yes, but it changes how the work goes. Most homes here have low-pitch roofs over concrete block, so the attic narrows fast toward the eaves and the last few feet of a flex run are often reachable only by arm, not by body. We clean from inside the house wherever we can, pulling registers, working the branch lines back toward the plenum from the living space, and only go into the attic for the sections that require it. If a run is in a spot nobody can physically reach, we tell you that instead of pretending we cleaned it.
There's old duct board in my attic from the original system. Does that get cleaned too?
It depends on its condition. A lot of Town 'n' Country homes have been through one or two system replacements, and it's common for the installer to have left the original duct board plenum in place and tied new flex into it. Duct board has a fibrous interior surface, so it can't be brushed aggressively the way sheet metal can; we use gentler agitation and negative air on it. If the board is sagging, delaminating, or has soft spots from years of humidity, cleaning won't fix that and we'll say so. That's a replacement conversation, not a cleaning one.
What actually goes wrong with ducts around here?
Two things come up constantly. The first is crushed flex. The attic space is shallow enough that runs get pinched against the bottom chord of a truss, either by the original install or by whoever has been up there since. A flattened run looks fine from the register but moves almost no air. The second is moisture. We're close enough to Old Tampa Bay and Tampa Bay that humidity stays high most of the year, and salt-laden air is hard on anything metal in the air handler area. Damp insulation, condensation at poorly sealed boot connections, and musty smells at the supply registers are the usual symptoms.
How quickly can someone come out?
Town 'n' Country is a large area but a compact one to drive, and we're working west Tampa regularly, so scheduling is normally within a few days. If you're calling because you smell something musty or you've noticed one room has gone dead on airflow, say that when you book. That moves you up, because a crushed or disconnected run is worth looking at before it costs you comfort through a humid stretch.
